When Marin County musician Danny Uzilevsky suffered a massive stroke or four in August 2026, the Marin County music community came together at Peri’s Tavern for a fundraising event called Uzi-Palooza.

I was there to photograph the event and left with an even greater appreciation for the community that surrounds Marin’s musicians.

I talked to a lot of people at Uzi-Palooza. Musicians. Friends. People who have known Danny for years. People who came out because someone they care about needed their help.

That’s one of the things I like about photographing live music. The photographs are rarely just about what happens on stage.

They’re about everything around it.

Uzi-Palooza featured a great lineup of Marin County musicians including Michael Brown, Essence Goldman, Jenny Kerr & Phillip Milner, Jonathan Korty & Friends, April & Monroe Grisman and The Beautiful Hang Gang, Beso Negro, Big Brother and the Holding Company, Shambollix, Darren Nelson and Sabbath Lives.

There was a lot to photograph and a lot to feel good about.

Danny has a long road ahead. As a professional musician, his work and income depends on his ability to play music, teach and produce records. A stroke of this magnitude changes all of that. His recovery will require time, rehabilitation, and ongoing support.

Uzi-Palooza can’t be a one-and-done.

The event raised money and, just as importantly, reminded Danny that he has a community behind him. But the need doesn’t end when the last band leaves the stage.

I don’t know what Danny’s financial situation looks like, and I don’t pretend to. I do know that

Living gig to gig,a lot of working musicians don't have top-of-the-line health insurance and don’t have massive copays in the budget. Amajor health crisis can have consequences that extend well beyond the hospital and rehabilitation.

So let’s keep showing up.

I’m donating every penny from the sale of Uzi-Palooza photographs to Danny’s GoFundMe. If you’d like a photograph from the event, you can find the gallery below.

And thank you to everyone who made Uzi-Palooza happen. Especially Tom Finch, who did an enormous amount of the heavy lifting to bring the event together.

It was a good night.

More importantly, it was a good reminder of what a music community is supposed to do.

Show up.
